A private tool for finding old pensions

Find the pensions you've forgotten. Then get the letters that ask the right questions.

£31.1 billion sits in lost and forgotten UK pension pots. The government's free service gives you a scheme's address and stops there. Pension Trail takes you the rest of the way — tracing, writing and chasing the letters yourself. Nothing is sold onward.

Everything stays in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.

Your employer list, notes and letters are saved only on this device, in your browser's local storage. We never ask for bank details, never sell your data, and never refer your pensions onward to anyone. Optional sign-in to save a case across devices is coming; today the tool works fully without an account.

The problem

A gap nobody was filling

The average lost pension pot is worth £9,470. Many people have several, scattered across employers they have not thought about in decades.

The government's Pension Tracing Service is free and genuinely useful — but it stops at handing you a scheme's contact details. It will not confirm a pension exists, will not tell you its value, and will not contact anyone on your behalf.

The services that fill that gap are generally free to use because they are paid a percentage of your money once it is transferred to them. That is how they are funded, and they say so. Nobody just gives people the letters.

That is the entire product. Pension Trail writes the letters. You send them yourself.

The case

Five stages, plainly laid out

A guided process with visible progress at every step. You can stop and come back; it saves to this device.

  1. 01

    Build your list

Add employers from memory, then request your NI record from HMRC to catch the ones you forgot. We write that letter too.

  2. 02

    State Pension forecast

Link to gov.uk to check your State Pension and any missing NI years. Separate from workplace pots.

  3. 03

    Trace each scheme

Use the free Pension Tracing Service for current addresses. We are explicit about what it does and does not do.

  4. 04

    Send the letters

A print-quality letter per employer asking the seven questions that matter. Sign and post.

  5. 05

    Chase at 25 days

We compute a chase date 25 working days from sending and flag it when it is due.

The signature question

Can you still take your pension at 55?

On 6 April 2028 the normal minimum pension age rises from 55 to 57. But some members hold a protected pension age — a right to take benefits earlier than the new minimum.

Almost no tracing letter asks about this. Ours does, in plain terms, alongside the other six questions that determine what your pension is actually worth and when you can reach it.
